FAQs

What is protein?

Protein is an important macronutrient found in the food we consume. Once eaten and broken down, protein provides us with the amino acids essential for the structure and function of our body. These acids are an essential part of a well-balanced diet. They allow our bodies to synthesise proteins that regulate growth, reproduce cells and keep our immune system strong.

What is Vegan85 protein powder?

Vegan85 is a dairy-free, protein-packed vegan alternative to our whey protein powder, derived entirely from plant-based sources. It is made from a unique blend of bioavailable pea isolate, pumpkin protein and organic brown rice protein resulting in a high protein content of 85% (24g protein per 30g serve) as well as a complete amino acid profile including all nine essential amino acids.

Why is there more than one protein source in this powder?

To give it a complete amino acid profile for maximum health benefits. Amino acids are divided into two categories: non-essential acids already found in our body, and essential amino acids. Essential acids are deemed as such because they cannot be synthesised or stored by our body, and are gained only by eating foods that contain them. A food that contains all nine essential amino acids is classed as ‘complete’. Achieving a comprehensive amino acid profile in a non-dairy product can be near impossible and undoubtedly more difficult when using a singular source. True has blended three plant-based proteins together in order to create a complete amino acid profile that is superior to other single-source non-dairy supplements on the market. These essential amino acids, including BCAAs, are necessary for a range of bodily processes including maintaining muscle and energy production.

Why do I need to supplement protein?

There is a common misconception that protein can only be consumed by eating meat, eggs and dairy. If you’re a vegan, you’ve probably heard the question ‘where do you get your protein from?’ more times than you can count. While animal products are a great source of protein due to the proteins found in their own bodies, it is entirely possible to get sufficient protein from plant-based sources. There are countless sources of easy-to-eat plant proteins available right at our fingertips. Some examples of foods naturally high in protein include nuts, legumes, beans, grains, rice, seeds and some fruits and vegetables. However, for those who are time poor, who aren’t sure how to prepare high protein meals, or have a smaller appetite, it may feel difficult to meet daily protein needs. True Protein’s VEGAN85 is an all-natural vegan blend that offers a protein content of 85% in its natural form. A unique blend of Belgium-sourced pea protein, Netherlands sourced pumpkin protein, and organic US-sourced brown rice protein, it is 100% derived from plant-based sources. This makes it the perfect solution for vegans or those looking for a non-dairy alternative to whey protein. Boasting an impressive 25 grams of protein per serve, it is an extremely easy, convenient and versatile way to boost your daily protein intake.

How is Vegan85 flavoured?

We use organic stevia to sweeten our flavoured proteins. The sweetener is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar and is found naturally in the leaves of the stevia plant native to South America. As it is naturally very sweet, we only need to add a small amount to our protein powders. Our in-house development team has pushed the boundaries of natural flavouring to develop a range of completely unique flavours that contain zero artificial ingredients or additives, whilst maintaining a delicious, natural taste. Every flavour is made using 100% natural ingredients including the likes of organic cinnamon, freeze-dried fruits and natural cocoa.

Does vegan protein help with muscle growth?

Yes. Protein helps repair and build muscle, which is why it’s helpful to consume protein in a shake or whole food source soon after you’ve worked out. Whether the protein comes from an animal or plant-based source, the components are the same: they are both made up of amino acids, just in different ratios. Consuming a surplus of protein is essential in providing your body with enough amino acids to continuously repair and rebuild muscle. A protein supplement can be the easiest, most convenient way to add protein to your diet. With an average of 24 grams per serve, VEGAN85 provides your cells with the amino acids they need to synthesise the proteins that stimulate muscle growth. Using Vegan85 alongside an appropriate training program and a well-balanced diet including calcium-rich foods such as nuts, beans and leafy greens, will aid in lean muscle growth, recovery and overall athletic performance.

How many protein shakes should I have per day?

Recent scientific research suggests that consumption of 1.2-1.6g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day is an appropriate protein target (1). For example, if your current weight is 80kg then your dietary protein requirements will be between 96-128g per day. However, for many elite athletes and competitive bodybuilders (and those competitively striving towards this level), protein needs may be even higher during peak season. In this case, the protein recommendations have been suggested as high as 2.3-3.1g/kg/d to maximise the retention of lean body mass in resistance-trained individuals during hypocaloric periods i.e. low/restricted overall energy intake (2).
A person’s individual requirements and current diet will need to be assessed in order to determine how many protein shakes you should be consuming. The majority of protein in your diet should come from whole food sources like meat, fish, dairy, seeds, beans and so on. Protein shakes can then be used to supplement your diet. One protein shake per day, or after each workout, is usually adequate, or up to three servings per day as required.

Is vegan protein powder as good for you as whey protein?

There is a lot of debate over this, as many plant-based proteins have an incomplete amino acid profile, which means they are missing one or more of the essential amino acids. However, True’s Vegan85 protein powder blend boasts a complete amino acid profile making it one of the healthiest plant-based proteins on the market. Side by side, the amino acid profiles of Vegan85 and WPI90 are very similar and, as every one of our products is 100% natural, whatever supplement you choose will be boosted by big health benefits.

When should I take my protein powder?

If using your protein alongside an exercise regime then we recommend enjoying a protein shake post-workout, within an hour of exercising, to enhance recovery. Protein shakes can also be consumed at any time throughout the day, depending on your individual needs. See above for our guidelines on recommended daily protein intake. Our protein can also be used as an ingredient in both sweet and savoury recipes. Check out our list of recipes here https://www.trueprotein.com.au/blog/recipes

Is Vegan85 good for weight loss?

Vegan85 protein powder can be used to supplement a healthy diet for weight loss. Creating an overall energy deficit through exercise and eating a good balance of whole food groups is key for anyone looking to lose weight – unfortunately protein shakes alone don’t contain any magic weight loss remedies. Despite the various claims from other companies, these pills and powders don’t exist! However, taking protein shakes alongside a healthy diet can aid weight loss. Protein is key for maintaining muscle mass and helps to keep your metabolism pumping. Protein shakes can also help fend off food cravings as they keep you feeling full and satisfied for longer. With no added sugar, nothing artificial, no fillers and trace amounts of fat and carbs, Vegan85 is totally natural and healthy for you, coming in at under 120 calories per shake when mixed with water and with less saturated fat than WPC80. Try replacing one of your usual snacks with a protein shake for a low-calorie, protein-packed boost that will keep you satiated for longer.

Can I take Vegan85 protein powder when pregnant or breastfeeding?

First and foremost, you should seek individualised advice from your doctor during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
During this time, adequate protein can usually be attained by consuming whole food protein sources such as tofu, beans, nuts and seeds. Sometimes this isn't always achievable, and a protein supplement can be a useful and convenient way to ensure an adequate diet.
Currently, there is no strong evidence discouraging the use of moderate whey or plant-based protein supplementation during pregnancy and lactation. The amount of protein that constitutes moderate supplementation will differ between individuals depending on their pre-pregnancy nutritional status, body weight and dietary intake.
Much of the confusion regarding protein powders relates to the added ingredients such as artificial flavours, sweeteners and preservatives as well as the risk of contamination of banned substances or heavy metals during processing of these powders. Trusting your brand as well as reading and interpreting the nutrition label is essential in understanding the ingredients within the product.

What are the best sources of protein for vegans?

Pulses are one of the best sources of plant-based protein out there, which is why our Vegan85 blend includes a healthy dose of pea protein, pumpkin protein as well as organic brown rice protein, another easily digestible ingredient rich in protein and dietary fibre. Other high-protein foods include quinoa, tofu, nuts, chia seeds, wild rice, chickpeas, beans and oats.

Can I use protein shakes as a meal replacement?

Short answer, yes, but it does depend on your dietary intake over the day.
A balanced main meal made up of whole foods should provide protein plus other nutrients like complex carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals. The energy or calories will vary but may provide between 400-600kcal. Meal replacement shakes are generally used to assist weight loss. Using Vegan85 as a meal replacement shake will provide adequate protein with much less energy. This energy deficit could help you lose weight, but you will have to ensure your dietary intake is nutritionally adequate throughout the day.

Can I cook with Vegan85?

Yes! Protein powder does not have to be restricted to shake form, you can add VEGAN85 to a variety of hot, cold and raw recipes including smoothies, smoothie bowls, baked goods, bliss balls, oats and raw vegan treats. This can make for a fun switch from your usual protein shake and keep you motivated to keep trying delicious new ways of eating more protein. Is being vegan healthier than eating animal products?

Like any person, vegans need to eat a well-rounded diet to ensure their bodies are getting enough essential vitamins and nutrients. As meat and dairy are often more concentrated sources of these vital ‘building blocks’, cutting them out can mean a little more planning is required to maintain a balanced diet. But that’s not to say you can’t lead just as healthy a life as a meat-eater. Being vegan usually means introducing more healthy, whole foods and grains into your diet, whilst reducing your carbon footprint, which is a huge plus! As with any diet, it is important to be well informed about vegan eating habits. A bit of planning and strategy is needed to make up for any gaps in nutrition as a result of cutting out animal products. Healthy vegans are aware of the variety of foods they need to consume in order to maintain a well-rounded diet and eat accordingly. This can include supplements such as VEGAN85 to assist in meeting daily protein requirements alongside a diet of whole foods.

How To Use +

Suggested Use

Add 1 Large TP Scoop (30g) to 200ml-250ml of liquid of your choice. Shake and consume. Consume 1-3 servings daily or as required.

True Protein recommends as a guideline 1.5 to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight. This recommendation is based on the assumption that your goals are to build lean muscle and enhance recovery. This translates to an 80kg person taking roughly 120g to 160g of protein per day. We recommend that you fulfill this quota through a combination of wholefoods and protein supplementation.
