Amazing Amazonian Açaí

Background

Açaí (pronounced a-sigh-ee) has long been heralded as a super food, and for good reason. Whilst of course it’s not a miracle cure for every ailment, açaí is rich in antioxidants, fibre, healthy fats, calcium and other vitamins and minerals. Not only that, the berries themselves are low in sugar! The açaí palm is found in the swamps and floodplains of Brazil and Trinidad as well as other parts of northern South America and is a dietary staple of those living in the Amazon region.

 

What it contains

When people talk about açaí, they tend to go on about its antioxidant properties. Açaí has an incredibly high ORAC score, making it one of the best natural antioxidants. ORAC stands for ‘Oxygen radical absorbance capacity’ and measures the ability of a food to slow the oxidation of other molecules. Oxygen is destructive to cells in the bodies and can lead to various cancers, elevated blood pressure, inflammation of arthritis and asthma, and accelerate ageing.
